382 Pre-adaptation: Premonitions for coping with future environments?

Patricia speculates on why kids are so into video games, and I think many of her points are true.

Since this is a fertile area for discussion, I would like to offer some theories I have about the situation that may strike you as very unorthodox, but might stimulate your thoughts.

You will notice that there is a recurring diagram in your textbook. It maps out the “eclectic model of theoretical perspectives”. You see it first presented in Chapter 4 on pages 132-133 in Figure 4-8. Go ahead and take a look.

The eclectic model is also found in each chapter as a unifying theme: see pp. 140-141, figure 5-2.

See what I mean? The eclectic model is everywhere!

The eclectic model describes how “objective physical conditions” in our environment interact with our “individual differences”, with “situational factors”, with “social conditions” and with “cultural factors”, creating in each one of us a “perception of the environment”. The model says that when we perceive our environment as “within the optimal range of stimulation” we are able to achieve “homeostasis” – a feeling of general well being in which we are in harmony with our environment and in balance.

Perception is everything!

When we perceive our environment to be outside the optimal range of stimulation for us (if it “overstimulates” or “understimulates” us or if it seems to be “behavior constraining”) it leads to feels of “arousal” and/or “stress” and/or “overload” and/or “reactance”.

This is an unbalanced state. All organisms who find themselves in this state try to utilize “coping” mechanisms. If coping is successful, the model tells us, we “adapt” and/or “adjust” to our environment. The result of this adaptation can be cumulative effects such as “higher self-esteem”, and “skill development”, but it can also lead to “fatigue” and “reduced frustration tolerance.”

If we are unsuccessful at coping, we experience “continued arousal” and/or “stress”, and the more we find ourselves unable to cope, the more our stress intensifies. The results of failing to adapt to this feeling of stress or arousal can be cumulative aftereffects such as “mental disorders”, “learned helplessness” and “performance deficits”.

All good so far? The model is “eclectic” because it considers many different possible causes and effects and it doesn’t look at everybody as being the same in their response to the environment. It tries to integrate the various theoretical perspectives we are learning.

Because this is a PSYCHOLOGY class, we are very concerned with PERCEPTION. We privilege the “brain” and “thought” in psychology classes and in psychological models. You could say we are “consciousness obsessed”. Our models assume that it is our perception of an “objective reality” that makes us behave the way we do. Our models assume that “thinking” and “feeling” (both occurring in the brain, even if they make our hearts flutter or make us get butterflies in our stomach) rule our lives. The models therefore don’t have much to say about genetic programs that force behavior in the absence of thought and perception. What, for example, drives an organism that is perfectly content with its environment (i.e. is in perfect homeostasis) to leave that homeostasis (i.e. “to leave HOME-eostasis”!) What urge makes millions of different life forms leave the comfort of the nest and strike out into dangerous unknown territories, with neither a map, nor a compass? What gives the cat its curiosity, and what makes Magellan or Columbus choose to set sail around the world? What prompted Neil Armstrong to volunteer to set foot on the moon?

These psychological models assume that we cope with either our past or present environments, and might explain such behavior by saying that people do it for the glory (because in their past they were socialized to crave fame and fortune and in their present they don’t feel content at home, unless they can prove they are better than their peers by taking risks). Some theorists might say that non-human animals are driven by instinctive urges that, over millennia of natural selection, turned out to increase the number of genes they left behind even though they took risks and deliberately left homeostasis behind in search of stress.

IN SEARCH OF STRESS?!

That’s right – the weakness I see in the eclectic model is that it assumes we all WANT to COPE. It assumes that the point of behavior is coping. It assumes that the point of life is comfort.

I don’t doubt that all organisms are motivated to “survive”. Over time those organisms that didn’t want to survive… well, they didn’t survive. So they didn’t leave many or any offspring. So any genes or memes that predispose us to sacrifice ourselves or take too many risks should get wiped out of the gene and meme pools.

But could it be that something else is operating here than so called “natural selection” operating on an organismic level? Could it be that in a very very large system, some organisms deliberately go in search of stress and discomfort, not because it will benefit them or their families but because it benefits some outside intelligence (the eclectic model can explain all altruism or sacrifice without reference to any outside intelligence rather nicely by saying that, for example, a parent will leave a comfortable home in search of food because she feels stress worrying about her child).

There is one possibility concerning how our psychology of behavior and our environments interact that the model ignores as far as I’m concerned, and it is the one I would like to discuss here: The possibility of some behaviors being “preadaptations” to environments that don’t exist yet.

The problem with “preadaptation” is that it is impossible to prove except in hindsight, and the problem with hindsight is that one can always claim that a successful result proves that an intuition was valid, even though the correlation could be due to chance.

By now you are scratching your heads and thinking, “what the heck is the professor talking about?” Let me try to clarify!

Let’s say that your name is Cassandra, or Noah, and you have a dream that there is going to be a tsunami or a great flood. Neither you nor your entire tribe have ever experienced a tsunami, there are no records of tsunamis in any of your legends, and when you describe what you saw in your dream nobody knows what the heck you are talking about. But your dream was so vivid that you feel you have to change your behavior. So you gather your family and you move to higher ground. Or you build an Ark. You are ridiculed by everybody else, but you persist.

One day, lo and behold, the entire region is completely drowned in a torrential flood. Everybody dies except for you and your family (and whoever you brought with you).

In hindsight you could say “the dream was a premonition, and the person behaved the way they did because the dream created a stress that had to be coped with.” The eclectic model would work, but it wouldn’t explain why THAT PARTICULAR VIRTUAL REALITY felt SO REAL that you HAD TO COPE with REAL BEHAVIOR.

In hindsight we would say, “the mutant person who is born with the strong sense that small changes in the present environment could signal major disasters was ‘preadapted’ to the new environment that was to come. Somehow they “knew” something that seemed to be unknowable given normal “perceptions” of the environment.

If this sounds far fetched, imagine that you are the first bird to be born with an instinct that you should fly south as the number of hours of sunlight begin to change. Let’s say you are a bird living in one of the interglacial periods of the earth during a time when there were no harsh winters in your region. You are happy eating grubs and very much in homeostasis and yet… something tugs at you. You tell the other birds, “we should really… start heading… south.” You might as well be Chicken Little saying “the sky is falling.” Every other bird laughs and laughs. “We’ve never gone south, for a thousand years, we have spent all year right here. Why on earth would you want to go south.” And you would say (if you could talk and reason, which birds can’t do very well!) “I don’t know, I just feel it. We should all… fly south.” The others of course don’t listen, so you grab your mate and say, “come on, sweets, let’s go on a little trip…”

That year the ice age begins, and you two are the only one’s who survive. Because you have these mutant genes that make you anxious whenever the “winter” starts to approach, you pass them on to your offspring. In time all birds of your kind have an instinct to head south in winter.

We call this kind of “mutation” a PREADAPTATION to environments that don’t yet exist.

Throughout history, the sudden appearance of organisms who feel urges to do things that seem completely mal-adaptive to current environments has mystified us, particularly when, at some future time, they turn out to be RIGHT!

The problem is, we can never know before hand if something is a pre-adaptation (a pre-coping mechanism for an environment that hasn’t arrived) or just plain INSANITY.

Now to the point: WE DON’T KNOW IF OUR CHILDREN’S OBSESSION WITH VIRTUAL REALITY AND OTHER TECHNOLOGY IS A COPING MECHANISM FOR STRESSES IN THE PRESENT ENVIRONMENT OR FOR COPING WITH A FUTURE ENVIRONMENT THAT WE CAN’T SEE!

I was thinking hard about this while I was getting obsessed recently playing “Resident Evil 4” on the Playstation. Imagine me, with all my work as a professor trying to finish my dissertation and teach classes and write, getting obsessed by some silly game where you go around shooting zombies. What gives? Perhaps I am just needing escapist fantasy, perhaps I need to feel like a hero – problem is, I do things in my real life that make me feel somewhat heroic, and my wife and I “escape” to far off lands all the time – we scuba dive, we visit temples and desert pyramids and jungles…

No, there is something about certain virtual reality games that tickle a different intuition. I notice that I don’t often play games like “Grand Theft Auto” or “Ghost Recon” or war games, or any games that take place in environments familiar to us today. When I do, I know it is for the usual escapist reasons. No, my obsessions, and those of many people, with science fiction COULD (and this is COMPELETELY UNPROVABLE!) be preadaptations. Is it possible that human beings intuit that the world we may inherit in the near future might be so very different from the one we live in today that we are desperate to figure out how to cope in those environments BEFORE they arrive?

How might the eclectic model of behavior explain human obsession with what now appear to be “fantasy” environments if some of these environments come to pass, and the humans who are best adapted to them are those who spent hours in them before they arrived?

This, by the way, is by no means any endorsement for children to play video games or waste hours watching TV or movies or lost in escapist fantasy! You probably shouldn’t even share this “meme” with your children because they might say, “see Mom, your professor thinks its okay to play video games because we are preadapting ourselves for a real future in which the Umbrella corporation uses genetic engineering to create a T-virus that mutates people into zombies so they can control the labor supply and get rich and powerful.” I am not saying that at all. In fact, after you read this, you should burn your computer and all the memes that are on it at Fahrenheit 451 degrees, so these ideas don’t replicate!

No, all I am doing is trying to stretch your mind around some rather radical views so that you can see that the eclectic model, like any model, is always and forever incomplete. You have to know, going into environmental psychology, that NONE OF THE THEORIES WE DISCUSS ARE TRUTHS. THEY ARE ALL SIMPLY THEORIES. Reality is out there, but, like Plato’s shadows on the wall, forever unknowable.

ALL WE HAVE ARE STATISTICAL PROBABILITIES.

Your job is to think deeply about everything you learn and find ways of criticizing and testing everything.

A final thought: How would the eclectic model apply if instead of being human beings with free will, we were actually the avatars we control in our video games? Is it your character in the video game who is perceiving his or her environment, or is it you, behind the scenes, controlling the avatar like a puppet? Do you think the avatar really would WANT to keep jumping into those adventures you put him or her through? Wouldn’t Lara Croft in Tomb Raider or Jack in King Kong really much rather stay home in homeostasis if you weren’t controlling them and exposing them to danger for YOUR SATISFACTION?

And if it is true that an outside intelligence can go into a virtual reality and control a character, and preadapt it with all sorts of skills and weapons and magic and training for some future environment that only somebody outside the game can know will occur (as when I recently bought a rocket propelled grenade launcher in Resident Evil 4 because I knew, although my avatar didn’t, that I was going to run into a giant) then is it not possible that, to some greater intelligence than us, we are mere avatars in an even larger game?

Hi Michelle -- Just want to clarify what we mean by "evolution" in environmental psychology so that the word doesn't trigger the wrong set of images or ideas when "unpacked". "Evolution" is defined by environmental psychologists as "a change in gene frequency or meme frequency over time." It is nothing more or nothing less.

By this definition, evolution is not something we believe in or don't believe in, it is a description of a process. What you are referring to is the "theory of evolution by natural selection as the cause of the variety we see in nature". Since none of us have a time machine and we can't go back to ancient environments to see whether changes in gene frequency led to speciation (the varieties of species of animals, plants, bacteria, fungi, and protozoans), none of us can really say how this planet ended up with its millions of different life forms. All we can do is speculate and interpret from the clues that our current environment communicates to us.

We do observe that genes and memes change in frequency in populations over time, and we know, from our experiments in genetic engineering and animal and plant breeding, that we can substantially modify the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of life forms; that is to say, we can change the way they look and behave. We also know that changes in environments can radically affect the genetic and behavioral characteristics of populations. By manipulating environments we can affect the types of organisms that can survive and prosper.

You should all know that I am a scientist who believes in God, and who understands what I believe to be God's process of evolution. I have designed a tee shirt I want to produce that says "God created evolution -- deal with it!" It is sure to anger both theists and atheists who want to create a conflict between evolution and special creation. I don't see any conflict at all. I think it is unfortunate that there are voices out there who want to make it seem as though science and religion are at odds. I have always seen them as supporting each other. Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Theophrastus Paracelsus, Copernicus, Galileo -- all beleived very strongly in God. What they were fighting was an interpretation of religious scripture BY MEN that contradicted the evidence they saw in God's world. They believed that God's Word and God's World were ONE. This is why Galileo, after being released from jail by the Inquisition muttered, "Nonetheless, the planets still move!!".

What we observe in our environments is that organisms change. Understanding this is very important now that we are the one's changing our environments. We need to understand HOW a given change in the environment of an organism affects its evolution. For example, we know very well that when you put thalidomide in the environment of pregnanat women, the children tend to be born with flipper-like arms and legs. If we don't remove thalidomide from the environment, the frequency of human children with flippers instead of hands and feet will increase, and the frequency of those with hands and feet will decrease. Over time in a thalidomide contaminated environment we end up with an evolution of a population in which the majority (the highest frequency) of people have flippers. This is a phenotypic effect. Similarly, radiation in our environment from nuclear weapons testing and nuclear powerplants changes our genes through mutation. In areas near Chernobyl, babies are born deformed. They pass those deformations on to their children because the deformations occur at a genetic level. Thus the more radioactive contamination we have in our environment, the more genetic damage we will cause our children and a population will evolve with horribly maladaptive characteristics.

This is the kind of evolution we can observe.

I share your belief that all animals (and I would also say all plants and bacteria and fungi and protozoans) were created for our benefit. I would go further and say that all objects in our environment were created for our benefit -- comets and stars and water and rocks too. Our course of study is to figure out how we can keep the delicate balance of nature that I believe God created functioning so that it continues to benefit us. One way to do this, in my view, is to understand how the evolutionary process that God created operates so that we can assist in keeping it pointed in a healthy and positive direction. To ignore how the frequency of genes and memes changes over time and with various selection pressures, whether "natural" or "artificial" is to turn a blind eye to our responsibility to keep the fragile clockwork that God set in motion ticking.

I hope that clarifies how I see what I think should never have been a debate or conflict between science and religion to begin with.

Good question! As far as I know, while Edison wanted us to use home grown DC (direct current) electricity from renewable resources and store it in nickel-iron batteries, Tesla championed the use of AC (alternating current) electricity. The power companies chose Tesla's invention because it enabled them to transmit electricity at high voltage over long distances fairly inexpensively. That let them control the energy sources. The legacy that Tesla left us is that we now have centralized energy and the awful electric grid. If Edison had won, we would have all be producing our own electricity from sun, wind and biomass for over a hundred years.

It is ironic to me because I live near the place in Egypt where the largest solar energy station was built in 1912-1913. It was destroyed when, during the First World War over energy resources, the world powers decided that they could offer cheap oil at a profit and thus dismantled all alternative energy sources. http://www.solarenergy.com/info_history.html

As for Tesla, his genius was always being abused by the political and business community. Not only did they corrupt his discoveries of AC power, but he died a paranoid and bitter man, fearing government and other conspiracies against him. Whether his ideas of using the earth's magnetism and ionosphere to create power will ever be realized is something we will have to wait and see!

370 The Future is Here, The Future is Now

Thanks for the kind words and for passing the link on Pat!

This video started out as a powerpoint presentation. I just wanted to show all the great new technologies that are in our environment that can help clean our environment and make it more safe! Eventually I had gathered all these pictures and ideas and decided to write a song to tie it all together (I call this my "melodic-mnemonic method" -- the melody and music and sounds act a mnemonic device, just as they did with Conjunction Junction and School House Rocks, as you mentioned!).

You can all do the same thing (you don't have to write a song, though!) for the midterm - - take ideas that you have learned in the first 7 chapters of the textbook and bring them to life with images and, if you like, sounds, and create a powerpoint presentation, just as if you were going to give a talk in class!

Thanks again! As the saying goes, "we appreciate your appreciation!"

Dawn -- you are spot-on correct bringing Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451" into this discussion (for those of you who don't have until 6am to read it, you can also rent the film of the book, which is quite good!)

There have been book bannings and book burnings for centuries (and often the heretics who wrote books were burned as well!); some of us in this class (like me!) are old enough to remember when Beatle albums were burned all over the US because John Lennon lamented that the Beatles had become "more popular than Jesus" and many people thought that he shouldn't point that out (perhaps they were afraid that the idea that they were more popular would actually encourage youth to question their values). The protestors burned the records to say that they were unhappy with this idea being talked about but of course this just made more people talk about it!

What we are talking about in the cases of suppression of ideas through destruction of the media in which ideas are coded is the attempt by organisms to "kill memes". A "meme" is an "idea virus" -- a unit of information that can invade the brain of an organism and affect its psychology of behavior. Prior to the evolution of cerebral environments of great complexity, organisms behaved according to relatively simple programs. They monitored their environments with their five senses and made decisions based on immediate inputs (avoid extremes of temperature, avoid extremes of noise or vibration, avoid areas where other objects exhibit erratic or fast movement etc.).

Since simple organisms didn't use their brains all that much, the most successful parasites were organic viruses that invaded cells and took over their machinery using the codes of life -- RNA and DNA.

As the brain evolved, it developed the capacity to store information as memories and reorganize that information to make predictions about the future and to behave according to old sensory inputs and to imaginary sensory input (imagination, forethought, planning.).

Human beings developed LANGUAGE -- an ability to compress information about both real and virtual environments and pack it in a symbolic form that could transmit that information into another brain.

Once a brain existed that could change its behavior because of sensory inputs that came in compressed packages, people could carry complex ideas around with them and deliver them to others. The ideas behave very much like viruses -- once they infect the brain, they can affect the behavior of the infected organism.

This can be extremely threatening, particularly to totalitarian governments and dictatorships and control freaks. Thus societies and often felt the urge to destroy the encoded form of the idea viruses and kill the originators of the idea viruses.

Getting rid of "can't find explorasi.exe" or "eksplorasi.exe" and "can't find copy.exe"

Hi y'all!

I've been having a terrible time getting rid of these two annoying messages and finally tracked down the solutions, so I want to save you the time and agony!

The first was some residual from malware that affected my registry. The problem is supposed to be caused by WORM_RONTOKBRO.K. Apparently "explorasi.exe" (or eksplorasi.exe) is a part of that worm or some such infectious bugger that got removed by my anti-virus software but the error notice remains because it left a trace of its existence in the registry so that the computer thinks it needs to find it everytime it boots up.

To get rid of this command I did the dangerous deed of going into my registry and deleting the reference. It actually wasn't so hard, but as they say "BE CAREFUL" because the registry is one huge initialization file (a .ini) that needs to load properly for your computer to work. It is like a genetic code and a single mutation can cause disaster I'm told.

Getting rid of the reference to explorasi.exe however, proved fairly easy:
Because the worm disabled my ability to edit the registry from within my username, I had to reboot my computer (which is a MacBook Pro running Bootcamp and Windows XP) in SAFE MODE so that I could access my administrator log in. This meant booting into windows and holding down the F8 key so that it asked if I wanted to boot into safe mode.

Once in safe mode, logged in as "administrator", I typed "regedit" in the "RUN" command line (you find that under the start button). This opened up regedit. And then I went to the Edit menu and went to "Find" and asked it to find "explorasi.exe" (or "eksplorasi.exe, depending on your problem). I had to do this many times, hitting F3 (for "find next"). The first times I looked for "explorer.exe" because what the machine is doing is telling itself that when it launches explorer it should look for "explorasi". But doing it this way you have to search through every reference to explorer.exe to find the one that references explorasi (or eksplorasi) . If you can find explorasi directly you are better off. Anyway, you have to delete this.
Here is what the worm added:
"Shell" = "Explorer.exe "%Windir%\eksplorasi.exe""
It is telling your computer that any time the Shell loads "Explorer.exe" it should also load %Winddir%\eksplorasi.exe. Since the eksplorasi.exe was deleted by the anti-virus software, the computer is looking for something that doesn't exist any more, and that is the hangup.
So what you do is simply delete "%Windir%\eksplorasi.exe".
This is a minor change and doesn't adversely affect your computer at all -- it effectively stops the machine from asking for the damn eksplorasi.exe file, which was the virus that fortunately got removed.

You theoretically should be able to edit the registry from your own user account and not have to go into Safe mode and into your administrator account. But if you have the same problem as me, your computer will tell you that the administrator has disabled your ability to edit the registry. I recently learned that this is "the virus speaking" -- the sneaky bugger tells you that your administrator won't let you edit the registry so that you can't get in and delete it easily. It is the virus (or worm or malware or whatever) that actually disabled your ability to edit the registry! Clever.

To re-enable your ability to edit the registry from within your account, you can download Symantecs "Tool to reset shell\open\command registry keys" from their website and follow the instructions here: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-050614-0532-99

Basically they tell you to download this .inf file called UnHookExec.inf to you desktop, right-click on it and choose install. It works like magic!
If you can't find it for some reason, here is the text in the file. I imagine you can copy the text below, paste it into a simple text file and name it UnHookExec.inf, save it to your desktop, right click on install and it should work just as well. I haven't tried this, so you are on your own, but it should work, because the text below is what is in the file:

Now, having solved those problems, we have to deal with this issue of the computer saying "Cannot find "copy.exe" whenever you try to double-click on the C drive (this is supposedly another effect of the same worm).
The best and simplest solution came thanks to Blog Marco:

Thankfully it does NOT involve going into the registry at all.
Happily, in this case, all you need to do is find the autorun.inf file for the drive that has the problem and delete the reference to "copy.exe". Unfortunately this wasn't so easy for me, as a search for the autorun.inf showed only the autorun.inf for my StarWars Battlefront game on my external hard drive. I learned that you can have many autorun.ini files on your machine, and you want the ones that are causing the problem. Blog Marco suggested that you go into Start/Run and simply type in C:\autorun.inf. This brings up the file in a Notepad text windo. For me it was a simple matter of deleting all the text in the file and saving it. For Marco, because his file was "read only" he had to save the file to the desktop and find a way to copy, paste it where the original file was, overwriting it. Since I don't know where my file was to begin with, I wouldn't know how to do that. Fortunately, all I had to do was delete the offending text (where it told the computer to find "copy.exe"; in other words, I erased ALL the text in the autorun.inf file).

Problem solved!

One last thing: My machine also kept giving me warning messages saying it couldn't find some files that were in chinese! It showed squares and chinese characters. To stop that message, I had to go to start/run and type in msconfig.exe. This brought up the System Configuration Utility. From there I clicked on the STARTUP tab and UNCHECKED the checkbox that loaded the entry with the funky chinese letters under the COMMAND column (apparently located in SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows)
I have no idea what this software is, or why it was in startup items, but unchecking it (i.e. disabling it) seems to have worked.

Hopefully, if you have the same problems, having done all this, your computer now boots up fine!
